There are so many reasons leading up to why you may be feeling overwhelmed as a busy mom. For me personally, some days it doesn’t take much!
However, it’s so important to remember that no matter how overwhelmed you get to stop and take it all in. It is so easy to lose our temper, get upset, and argue.
But there are so many ways to feel more in control! There are lots of great and practical ways to deal with feeling overwhelmed!
As a mom of 5, I want to share with you the things I do that help me. Though I’m only human and I definitely have my moments, as we all do, these are things that drive me to be a better mom and a better wife. I pray that these things help you, too!
1. Take A Breath
This seems like a given, right? Because it totally is, and that is definitely why it is one of the top things to do. When you’re feeling overwhelmed, stop and just breathe.
Literally, feel your breath rising and falling. Briefly forget what it is that’s overwhelming- just for a moment. It’s important to just stop and think and take back control.
2. Re-Evaluate The Situation
One of the things that I love most about my husband, is that he challenges my mind. He challenges the way that I think and there have been countless times where I’ve said “Wow, I didn’t think about it that way before”.
And sometimes that is exactly what we need. It’s important to step back and take a look at every aspect of what’s overwhelming and figure out what to do to make it even a little easier.
3. Come Back To It Later
Sometimes the thought of folding laundry overwhelms me. Can you relate? But you know what? Sometimes I say…I’ll do it later. Now, this isn’t the best example because I am a huge procrastinator, but, sometimes coming back to things later is just what needs to be done.
I am slowly learning that laundry is much less overwhelming if I do a little bit at a time, instead of letting it pile up. It’s okay to come back to things later. Laundry, dishes, an important conversation. Just don’t let it pile up, or you’ll be right back in the same boat, or worse.
4. Talk To Someone
As I said, my husband makes me think about things in ways I never have before. It’s always a good idea to talk to someone, not to validate if you’re right or wrong but just to talk.
It’s nice to get another opinion and sometimes it can really put things in perspective! It can also be one of the most effective things to do when you’re feeling overwhelmed as a busy mom!
5. Write Your Feelings Down
I used to be great at writing things down and then stopped once I started having kids. I’m slowly trying to get back to literally writing things down but it always helps to write down your feelings.
When you write it down it becomes real, you can see it, feel it, and you can have major breakthroughs from seeing words written! It’s also a form of holding yourself accountable.
6. Take A Shower
This will always be on my to-do list for feeling better. There is nothing like a nice shower to clean up your mind and body! There are countless times where I haven’t felt good either physically or emotionally and a shower tremendously helps!
This may even help your kids, too! Sometimes a good bath or shower is all we need to feel better again and refuel our bodies as well as our minds!
7. Light A Candle
I have recently started lighting lots of candles and they put me in a nice mood all the time. Just sitting down with a lit candle, (especially after a shower), just makes for an environment of self-reflection.
I also like to light them when I’m working during the day. I have also found awesome deals that aren’t super expensive, which makes it all the better.
8. Step Away For A Moment
Sometimes we definitely need to step back for a few seconds. This is the time to literally step away and take that shower, go for that walk, or do whatever you need to do to pull yourself back together.
For me, this looks like taking a 5-minute bathroom break. It really does look different for all of us, but our result is always the same. To come out a stronger mama than ever before.
9. Listen To Your Tone & Change Your Attitude
This one is huge and probably one of the most important ones on this list. Personally, being overwhelmed can sometimes make me crabby and snippy. Being crabby toward the people you love is no fun at all for you or for your loved one. It’s something that is in the back of my mind all the time.
So, when you feel that tone of voice and attitude creeping in, do everything in your power to redirect it and stay positive.
Now, this is certainly the most important thing you can do when feeling overwhelmed. Pray, pray, pray. There is nothing more powerful and nothing that will work any better!
Letting God know what’s on your mind and heart will put you at ease and that is the key to taking that awful feeling of overwhelm off of your shoulders.
Motherhood is hard, yet amazing and sweet. When we feel that sense of overwhelm as moms, it can be a lot. Sometimes almost too much.
I truly hope this list helps you! It’s most definitely not always easy for me, but you know what? I have my moments and I slip out of it as soon as possible.
And that’s all we can really do, is use these tactics, again and again, to overcome feeling overwhelmed as a busy mom. And know that God is with us through it all.
